December 2025 Issue

Cool things taking shape!

We celebrated a huge milestone when Dakota P, one of MRWA’s first apprentices, became our very first graduate! Dakota started the program with some prior credit, and I had the honor of presenting him with his Maryland Department of Labor graduation certificate at a town meeting, with his family there to cheer him on. Congratulations, Dakota!

Later in the month, I got to hand-deliver stipend checks to our apprentices and mentors and let me tell you, seeing hardworking people smile never gets old. Along with the NRWA stipend checks, I also delivered PPE items that MRWA was able to purchase thanks to a Maryland Department of Labor grant. It felt amazing to share funds and materials that directly impact our apprentices.

MRWA was also honored to participate in the Rural Maryland Council Rural Summit in Annapolis, sharing our work and connecting with others dedicated to supporting rural communities.

Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to welcome Jason M. from Berlin as our first wastewater apprentice in Cohort 6, starting January 2026! There’s still time to get your apprentice on board for Cohort 6 – don’t miss this opportunity!

Grant/Scholarships:

Exciting news! I’ve still got grant funding ready to cover the cost of the related technical instruction for 13 more apprentices — first come, first served so get it while its available!

We can help you cover the costs!!! This is a fantastic opportunity for rural utilities to hire new employees, or bring on an existing team member, as an apprentice with no extra costs for the program. Plus, we still have funding available for PPE items, and the NRWA stipends are still available too!

Eligible Applicants Ready for a career in water, in your area:

We have eligible applicants ready to join utilities in Myersville, Federalsburg, and Salisbury.  If your utility is looking to hire or expand your team, we can help connect you with qualified apprentices and guide you to available funding opportunities to make the process easier. Don’t miss the chance to bring talented new team members on board! Email patty.shreves@md-rwa.org

On the Road with MRWA Apprenticeship Coordinator:

I’ll  be heading to Chesapeake Beach to meet with apprentices gearing up for Cohort 6, starting January 2026.

On top of that, I’ll be attending the North Dorchester Middle School Career Networking Event, connecting with local students and community members about careers in water and wastewater.

It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting end to the year!
