On March 10, 2026, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) adopted regulations that require community and non-transient non-community public water systems to: notify customers of water outage events, flooded wells, and flooded springs under certain conditions; perform corrective actions for these events depending upon risk; and issue a boil water advisory (BWA) under certain conditions. These regulations will be effective July 1, 2026. MDE coordinated with MAMWA and utilities to reach a regulatory approach that protects public health while balancing utility impact. MDE will distribute the new regulations and companion guidance document to water systems via email this spring and publish the material on the Water Supply Program’s webpage.
